Georgia's 2019-2020 deer season is now underway after an opening weekend that saw continued above average temperatures for this time of year. I've seen reports of a few respectable bucks taken that I have been sharing on our Facebook page, as well as a fair number of antlerless deer. I took a look at Georgia DNR's game check report this evening and wanted to share those results with you. There are two tables in this report. The sun has set on the last day of Georgia's 2017-2018 firearms deer season and according to game check results, hunters had very similar success to the 2016-2017 season. So far, Georgia deer hunters have checked in 183,327 deer — just 481 more than the previous season. Interestingly, 52 percent of the harvest were bucks and 48 percent were does. That's almost an exact flip-flop of previous season when 49 percent of the harvest were bucks and 51 percent were does. Also notable was that archery hunters harvested 1,587 less deer in 2017-2018, but firearm harvest increased by 2,044 deer. We just wrapped up the second weekend of Georgia's 2017-2018 deer season. While we had a few really nice days following Hurricane Irma things quickly warmed up for the weekend. Facebook was pretty quiet over the weekend as far as deer harvests go, but there was one exceptionally nice buck taken by Thomas Shea Lamb in Sumter County.
