Georgia Hunters Harvest Over 4,000 Deer Opening Weekend Despite Rainy Weather

Despite wet and nasty weather for much of the state, Georgia hunters had a solid opening weekend, harvesting an estimated 4,085 deer across the state. That’s a significant increase over the 2,479 deer checked in opening weekend of 2023. Of those 4,000-plus deer, 1,674 were bucks and 2,411 were does.

With better overall weather conditions, North Georgia counties led the harvest. In fact, the top five counties for total deer harvest opening weekend were:

  1. Hall – 152 deer
  2. Union – 115 deer
  3. Cherokee – 93 deer
  4. Walton – 82 deer
  5. Fulton – 80 deer

Not only did Georgia hunters kill their fair share of deer this weekend, but there were some great bucks killed, as well. We’ve shared some of the ones we came across below. If you know of one we missed, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at brian@georgiaafield.com.

Some Exceptional Opening Weekend Bucks

Jay Maxwell of 46Ten Productions knocked down a hammer of a Georgia buck opening weekend. Look for the hunt on an upcoming video. Photo was taken by Jay’s daughter, McKenna.
Thomas Shea Lamb killed this tremendous buck in southwest Georgia Saturday evening.
Chase Turner caught this giant suburban 6-pointer slipping on Saturday evening. To top things off, the buck was still in velvet!
Logan Shaw was able to bring down a buck he had six years of history with, including finding several shed antlers and having two previous encounters.

If you had some luck opening weekend, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below, or feel free to send us some pics with the details of the hunt to brian@georgiaafield.com, and we may be able to share them on the Georgia Afield Facebook and Instagram accounts.
